Notes on William Edmond MOULD

William MOULD was originally a chimney sweep, with his father John, living in a cottage in London Road, Kingston near the police station.  William built his first small boats at Fairfield, Kingston naming the first boat “The Jessie” after his mother and the second “William” after his father.  William set up a boat business with his brother Tom taking 39 High Street, Kingston as their base with their boatyard at the rear.

William's son, also William, later took over the family business with his brother Reg until retirement in 1976 when the business was sold to F and B Boats.

Reg still lives in Kingston (1983) and William Jnr retired to live in Hampton, Middlesex.

At Mould Boats the family had 4 passenger pleasure boats – The Countess, The Duchess of Kent, The Formosa and The Kingstonian later renamed La Marguerite, which could hold 275 passengers.  These 4 boats were bought by Jo Mears of Eel Pie Island, Twickenham.

After 1946 Moulds concentrated on smaller boats owning The Tower, The Ivy and the Parmesan Belle.

The largest ever built was the steel hull SINHA built for London Agent, James POLLACK.  The boat was taken to the River Plate.

The family’s mechanic was a Joe ROBSON and the carpenter was brother Stephen MOULD.

In his youth Tom worked at a Butcher’s shop in London Road, Camberley.  In about 1910 he left home and moved to Grove Road, Surbiton, Surrey where he worked for Shilling’s Butcher in Victoria Road, Surbiton.

In 1912 he started work at the Metropolitan Waterboard in Surbiton.  About this time he met Ellen HOOKER who was in service in Surbiton.  They married in Ellen’s home town, Dogmersfield in 1913.  Tom was in a protected occupation at the start of the Great War and did not enlist until 1st December 1915.  At this time he was living at 2 Etwell Place, Surbiton Hill, Surrey.  His Attestation shows he joined the 335th Company Royal Engineers No. 240337 or 246337 and was placed on Army Reserve on 2nd December 1915.  He was mobilized on 20th February 1917 and embarked on B.E.F (British European Forces?) France on 12th March 1917.  On demobilization he was place on Reserve on 2nd March 1919.    Documents show Tom later with a Regimental Number 24938.  He received the British War Medal on 22nd March 1922.

On demobilization Tom returned to the Metropolitan Water Board in Surbiton.  By 1936 he had moved with his family to 2 Fleece Road, Surbiton (now Seething Wells Lane).  In April 1939 the family moved to 50 Roebuck Road, Chessington.  He remained at M.W.B until his retirement aged 65 in 1953.
